"What a terrific event!", was heard throughout the dining room as the evening came to a close. We celebrated our 18th Annual Benefit this past Saturday at the Riverside Golf & Country Club with about 160 supporters in attendance. Mission Director, Fr. Miguel Quintanilla, S.J. was in attendance but our old friend Fr. David Ungerldeider was not able to attend due to prior commitments.
Local musical duo and friends of the cause "Reeds & Keys" provided a warm backdrop of jazz standards to set the mood. Thank you to Martin and Julie Fleck for taking on the role of Presenting Sponsor. Your support over many years is truly appreciated. Thank you as well to our Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze sponsors for making this event possible.
For the first time in several years, a cool and wet day welcomed the guests as they registered and then proceeded into the main social gathering room for passed appetizers, drinks and fellowship. The Organizing Committee had done an exceptional job of prepping the facility with an incredible selection of premium raffle packages, a wine cellar wall and past Fund-An-Item posters. For the first time, we held a program called "Play It Forward" which sent an athletic ball to a child in need in the Copper Canyon for every $100 block of raffle tickets purchased. 66 people took advantage of this which means that 66 balls (and other equipment) will soon be sent to Fr. Miguel. Thank you also to the Brad and Tammy Miller family for hosting a new event called "Sangria Meets the Millers". This party sold out quickly and will take place next summer with all of the proceeds going to the TCH Endowment Fund.
Paul Baker, past MC and current board member, was joined by Brad Miller, also a current board member, as co-MC's. Both very natural and comfortable in front of a crowd, they did a terrific job of welcoming the crowd and keeping the timing on track and all in a fun and interactive way. The Club delivered a choice of Filet Mignon or Roasted Salmon and both were outstanding as was the service.

After dinner, we were pleased to welcome Steve Schneider of Schneider Water Services to give an update on the Water For Life (WFL) project that began last year. (Please view separate blog posting for a complete report on that). Fr. Miguel delivered an interesting and inspirtational appeal on the current conditions in Creel and the need to support this year's Fund-An-Item (FAI), "Hospital Accreditation". The FAI generated approx. $40,000 toward that effort thanks to the generosity of everyone in the room as well as a matching grant of $10,000 from the B.P. Lester & Regina John Foundation, long time supporters of the Mission.

After a short break to stand and take part in our "Heads-or-Tails" game, it was now time for our Raffle Package drawings. Peggy Brockamp, event chairwoman, administered the drawings in a fun way and 14 very happy people left with some excellent prizes.
It is hard to believe that next year will be our 19th Benefit but none of it could have been possible without the tireless dedication of the Mission, the Board, volunteers, friends and supporters in Portland, the NW and around the world. You all deserve a pat on the back and a hearty "thanks". We hope that you will mark October 7, 2017 on your calendar now.
Thank you and regards,
John and Peggy Brockamp
